Rhiannon & Shaun wanted a fun, relaxed, wedding with family and friends, and since they had already experienced the tropical beauty of the destination resort, Excellence Riviera Cancun, they decided that it would be the perfect place for an intimate beach wedding.
From the Bride, Rhiannon:
Shaun and I had visited the resort, Excellence Riviera Cancun, on vacation two years before our wedding. We saw a couple get married on the beach and realized then that a destination wedding seemed to be a natural choice for us. We are an interfaith couple and come from different cultural backgrounds, so we wanted a wedding that could bring together the diverse members of our communities (family/friends/important people) in a way that was unique and beautiful without “choosing sides”, so to speak. The more traditional aspects of your “everyday” wedding didn’t appeal to us. When we pictured our wedding, we really liked the idea of setting up this awesome opportunity for the most important people in our lives to all come to one place and have an incredible vacation as a group. I wanted to minimize the stress of planning, and a destination wedding was easier on our budget than an at-home ceremony/reception would have been.

How did you meet?
Shaun and I met online. We exchanged phone numbers and were immediately texting back and forth all the time. We video chatted and talked on the phone every few days, and finally met in person for sushi about a month after the Internet brought us together. We think it’s random and totally weird that we met the way we did, as neither of us was online “looking for love” really…but we’re grateful for the crazy ways the world wide web works!
Tell us about your Inspiration and Style
You could say that “low-key + super fun + totes awesome” was our theme. I like bright, summery colors so deep magenta + purple + yellow were an obvious choice in terms of color scheme. But I didn’t want the wedding to be too monochromatic in such a rich, tropical setting, so along the way we sprinkled in some turquoise and I told the guests to wear whatever they wanted as long as it was bright and fun. A lot of the wedding details were things I ordered from Etsy (all of my wedding dress accessories, our cake topper, most of the items in our guests’ gift bags, etc.), which made the wedding day feel fresh and personal, a reflection of our individual styles and interests.
What are some of your favorite memories of the day?
The most special moments of the wedding day for me was gathering at dinner with our guests. It was such an intimate, lovely experience. The food was excellent and I just remember this incredible feeling of connection and celebration with the people we love most. Totally randomly and organically, my dad stood and gave a toast, recognizing Shaun and me as a couple and everyone around us who had traveled to Mexico to support our union, and then one by one, everyone else at the table gave a toast too! It was totally unplanned – I hadn’t even told my sister to prepare a toast. Everyone shared how they had come to know us, expressed their love and support, and it was such an amazing feeling of community and gratitude for the special people in our lives.
Do you have any advice for other brides?
I think a lot of brides might not think a destination wedding would suit them…maybe it seems too casual/not formal enough, or like it would be a hassle to plan a wedding from afar. And for some, a destination wedding really might NOT be the best idea. If you know yourself to be a control freak who may lose it if so much as a petal is out of place, then maybe a destination wedding really isn’t for you. But I would recommend to other brides, if you’re not aggressively type-A, to consider doing a destination! And I should say that we did NOT want a generic, “what you see is what you get” wedding, which is what I initially feared when we chose to do a destination wedding. Our day was completely customized to our preferences and style, plus it was in a beautiful location. I used the forums and threads on www.bestdestinationwedding.com to help me plan and get ideas, and I would recommend the website for anyone considering doing a destination wedding!
