I’m thankful for all the talented photographers, and bride’s & grooms, who allow me to share their wedding pretty with you all. Seriously, my cup runneth over with all the beautiful wedding’s coming my way, & today I have pleasure of sharing Brittany & Dan’s elegant fall wedding at The Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. Brittany & Dan’s D.C. wedding is classic fall elegance at its best, and I’m just loving all the shades of plum mixed with gold, the fabulous florals provided by Uncloudy Studio, the grandeur of the venue, and Brittany’s gorgeous dress. And if that wasn’t enough, Shandi Wallace Photography captured some of the most stunning pictures of the couple in autumn’s light that I have just fallen in love with.
From the Bride, Brittany:
How did you meet?
Dan was a year above me in law school. We met right before my first semester started. We enjoyed talking from the beginning, and I knew I liked him immediately. One day, emboldened with a bit of liquid courage, I asked him if I could cook him dinner—and I did. I must be a great cook, because we’ve been together ever since.
Tell us about your Dress( it’s absolutely gorgeous!). Your venue. Your wedding style & your choice of colors.
I was dead set against the big bridal salons. I wanted something entirely different. I tried on dresses at several smaller independent boutiques, but hadn’t found anything I loved. My mom came into town one weekend, and I wanted to have the experience of trying on dresses with her, even if I didn’t buy. We ended up going to a giant superstore, and I knew the moment I tried that dress on it was for me. I loved that it wasn’t strapless and deep dip in the back.
We actually planned our wedding from Indianapolis, Indiana. Finding a venue was difficult because we couldn’t just pop on over to check them out. I saw wedding photography done at the Carnegie Institution and I knew I wanted to be married there. The space is elegant and makes an impression, but is still small enough for the intimate, small wedding we wanted.
Our wedding style was, I suppose, intimate and romantic? We had lots of candles and unruly flowers and garland and pops of gold. I chose gold and plum because I thought they fit fall well. I also loved plum in flower bouquets, and the girls’ dresses were really gorgeous!
What are some of your favorite memories of the day?
The music we played at our wedding. Music is important to me, and Dan and I put a lot of thought into the music that played while people entered (Miles Davis, Kind of Blue) and the music for our processional and first dance (all Louis Armstrong). All the music that played came from records we regularly listen on repeat at home, so it was sort of like bringing a bit of home to the wedding.
Our actual ceremony is my best memory of the day. Our vows were very personal and intimate, and it felt wonderful to share them with each other and to speak them in front of our friends.
Do You have any advice for other brides?
If there is something you want to do that seems nontraditional, do it anyway. You won’t regret it.
